I have figured out how to remove a stuck disc from the Sony BDP-S350 player. I experienced the same problem as some other people in that the player did not like my CD-R disc and got stuck in the update mode. Simply removing the stuck disc does not get the player out of update mode. You must extract the stuck disc, manually insert a good update disc, and restore power to the device. Here are the steps:
(1) Disconnect the player from all cables.
(2) Remove the five screws holding the black metal panel to the player.
(3) Hold the player so you are looking at its front.
(4) Peer inside the player on the right-hand front side of the drive unit. There is a small hole labeled with an "E".
(5) There is a small ribbon cable that runs from the front panel to the circuit board to the right of the drive unit near the "E" hole. Carefully disconnect that cable from the circuit board so it is not in your way.
(6) Get a large paper clip and bend it into the shape of a poker with a handle.
(7) Insert the paper clip into the "E" hole. Note that the drawer does not open by itself. You have to feel around with the paper clip until you detect that you are pressing the right thing inside the drive to release the drawer. While pressing with the paper clip, use a small screw driver to pry open the drawer. It takes a bit of experimentation, but I have done it several times now and it isn't too hard once you get the hang of it.
(8) Once you have the drawer open, remove the problematic disc and insert a good update disc.
(9) Push the drawer closed.
(10) Reattach the ribbon cable to the circuit board.
(11) Reattach the black metal panel using the five screws.
(12) Plug in the player. Don't press anything. It will automatically go into update mode, but this time it should work and the player should display "FINISH".
The first time I made an update disc, I used ImgBurn to make an ISO9660 disc. It didn't work. My successful disc was created using ImgBurn to make an ISO file that was ISO9660+Joliet. I then burned the ISO file to a CD-R.
I'm really glad I figured this out because I didn't want to throw the player away!

Great tip on removing the disc!
I followed the directions, except I did not need to disconnect the ribbon cable--just bent the paperclip to avoid the cable. I found it helpful, after removing the cover, to work on the unit with the left side in my lap and the "E" hole facing me. This allowed my right hand to manipulate the paperclip and my left hand to use a small screwdriver to lightly pry on the disc door.
After removing the stuck update disc I had created, I inserted the factory update disc. After attempting to load the disc for several minutes, the disc ejected with "sys err" displayed. Shutdown the unit, power it up, and verified via the "System Settings" menu no update had occurred. Attempted to update again with the factory disc via the normal Firmware Update instructions. This resulted in an "unknown disc" error displayed on the TV.
Ejected the disc, powered down the unit, moved it to another TV close to my computer system. Plugged in the Ethernet cable into the BDP-S350 player, powered up the unit, and performed a normal network update. It progressed normally and resulted in a successful update and a fully functional Blu-ray player.
My suggestion, if possible, is to perform a network update once you extract the stuck disc and not even bother with trying a OEM update disc.
